The word "Siwan" means the border in Bhojpuri. Currently it is not located as border district of Bihar, India but formerly it was the southern border of Greater Nepal that's why it called "Siwan", the border.

As of 2011 India census, Siwan had a population of 108,172. Males constitute 47% of the population and females 53%. Siwan has a literacy rate of 72%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 69%, and female literacy is 55%. In Siwan, 15% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Siwan district is one of the districts of Bihar state, India. Siwan town is the administrative headquarters of this district. Siwan district is a part of Saran Division since 1972. The town is known for its great past especially for First President of Indian Republic who belonged to Jeeradei. The district is also known as Aliganj Sawan after the name of Ali Bux. Siwan has historical and mythological importance attached to it

Siwan became a fully-fledged district when it was split from Saran in 1976.
